Ultrasun was founded three decades ago, by a Swiss chemist whose brother had been a victim of skin cancer. He was determined to make a difference by combining his own life experience with his knowledge and expertise as a chemist. Still made and formulated by Swiss skincare experts, their ethos remains the same today, to find a way to make protecting against the sun easier for all, no matter the skin type, skin tone, age or lifestyle, whilst also being environmentally friendly, reef friendly and ocean safe.

Abi Cleeve, MD of Ultrasun UK explains more about sun exposure and the importance of sun protection.

What does "broad-spectrum" mean and why is it important?

Most importantly, know your skin and choose the protection that suits it.

Broad-spectrum means the product protects against both UVA and UVB rays. SPF only measures UVB – which burns the skin – but UVA rays penetrate deeper and cause long-term damage, ageing, and increased cancer risk.

Different systems exist to measure UVA protection. The simplest is the percentage of UVA absorbance. At Ultrasun, we clearly display the % of UVA protection on all packaging. All Ultrasun products have a very high UVA filter of over 90%, compared to the EU minimum standard of 33%.

What is SPF and what’s the best number to apply?

SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. It measures how well a product protects against UVB rays. For example, if your natural sun tolerance is 10 minutes, SPF 30 would allow approximately 300 minutes of exposure. However, this depends on application, skin type, location, and environmental factors

SPF alone isn’t enough. Choose a product with high UVA protection (ideally over 90%) as well as the right SPF number for your skin type and lifestyle.

How much SPF should we apply in the UK vs. on a beach holiday?

It’s less about how much and more about which factor and how you apply it.

SPF should be selected based on your skin type, location, and sun exposure – your personal sun account. Always follow product-specific instructions and reapply as advised (especially after swimming, perspiring, or towel-drying).

Application matters. Apply to cool, clean, dry skin, indoors or in the shade, 15–30 minutes before sun exposure. If applied in direct sunlight, up to 60% can evaporate before it bonds to the skin.

Guideline: 2mg/cm² – roughly a teaspoon for the face. Use one teaspoon per arm, leg, front, back, and face (including ears and neck).

How can you tell if your sun cream is "reef safe"? What does that mean?

Ultrasun formulas have always been reef safe, but we’ve gone further. We are the first and only sun protection brand awarded the BASF EcoSun Pass.

Reef-friendly often means a product is free from just four ingredients known to harm coral reefs:

  • Oxybenzone (Benzophenone-3)
  • Butylparaben
  • 4-Methylbenzylidene camphor (4-MBC)
  • Octinoxate (Ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate)
  • However, marine and ocean safety also considers factors like biodegradability, bioaccumulation, and aqua toxicity. The EcoSun Pass covers eight key criteria – including endocrine suspicion and sediment toxicity – to ensure full environmental responsibility. Ultrasun surpassed all eight.

    Sunscreen facts worth knowing

  • Absorption and formulation: We use lamellar structure technology, mimicking the skin’s natural structure to enhance ingredient delivery and prevent irritation. This ensures actives like Ectoin and Hexylresorcinol stay effective throughout the day.
  • Water-resistant ≠ waterproof: No sunscreen is waterproof. Water resistance means it holds up for up to 40 minutes underwater. Reapply as needed.
  • Check your sunscreen’s shelf life: Look for the PAO symbol (Period After Opening). Ultrasun products are effective for two years after opening.
  • Don’t neglect vulnerable areas: Women: shins and feet; Men: scalp, back, chest; Lips: often forgotten and easily damaged. Try Ultrasun Lip Protection SPF30.
  • Prickly heat is not caused by heat alone: It’s a trauma response to UVA exposure. Use high protection and allow your skin time to adjust.
  • UV reflection varies by surface: Snow: +80%; Sea foam: +25%; Sand: +15%.
  • Perfume + sun = skin damage: Perfume on the skin can reduce SPF effectiveness and increase pigmentation. Avoid spraying directly on skin before sun exposure.
  • Fake tan is not sun protection: DHA (in self-tanners) can degrade UV filters. Never rely on fake tan as your SPF.
  • SPF in makeup is not enough: SPF15 in makeup is too low and often applied too thinly. Use SPF30+ photostable sunscreen underneath.
  • Do darker skin tones need sunscreen?

Absolutely. While darker skin has a natural SPF of about 13, that’s not sufficient.

Dija Ayodele, founder of Black Skin Directory, explains:

“Black skin can still burn and is prone to hyperpigmentation and uneven tone from UV damage. Though less likely to develop melanoma, Black individuals are more likely to die from it due to late detection.”

A high UVA filter (preferably 90%+) and SPF30+ are essential for all skin tones. Daily use under makeup, indoors before exposure, ensures effective protection without the chalky residue.
