Why we love Coconut oil
Aside from its wonderful, tropical smell, coconut oil is a wonderful natural resource that has a variety of uses. There are many benefits to using this diverse oil, and it is a true problem solver. This ‘magical elixir’ has applications both in the kitchen and in the bathroom, for a wide array of solutions.
Coconut oil benefits for skin
Coconut oil is highly moisturising and very effective on the skin. This is due to its content of lauric and capric acids. These components are what make coconut oil antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal (great for acne prone skin when used correctly!) Here's what you'll find in it:
- Lauric acid: particularly effective to tackle the bacteria P. acnes, which is the bacteria that is linked to acne. Lauric acid is also found in breast milk, making it easily recognised and welcomed by the human body.
- Capric acid: excellent emollient with great antimicrobial properties. They can help protect pores from free radicals that cause ageing.
- Vitamin E: protects skin from cracking, keeping it smooth and helping it repair itself. It’s full of antioxidant properties.
- Proteins: help keep skin healthy inside out, contributing to cellular health and tissue repair. Proteins replace damaged cells that cause wrinkles.
Does coconut oil block pores?
Although there’s a common belief that coconut oil blocks pores, there has not been any concrete proof that it does so. Speaking to Dr Mariano Spiezia about the possibility of coconut oil blocking pores, he said:
“Coconut can be theoretically slightly comedogenic, but this depends on the quality of the skin and the amount used. It is of course important to use organic and cold-pressed coconut oil. But aside from what you’re actually applying to your skin, stress, hormone imbalance, diet, your lifestyle, use of synthetic makeup, etc. can all contribute to blackheads and acne. Therefore, without considering the full picture, we cannot affirm that coconut oil is comedogenic!”

Benefits of coconut oil on the face
As well as being an emollient and antibacterial ingredient, Coconut Oil is also anti-ageing, due to its high content of antioxidants. These can help to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and slow down the ageing process.
Here our top Pics:
Acne Prone Skin: We always recommend cleansing the face as a first step of any skincare regime, removing dirt and grime. Our Face Cleanser balm is ideal to use on sensitive and problem prone skin, with its high content of coconut oil as well as an array of astringent, anti-sebum and antioxidant ingredients.
Facial Lines: Your face is most likely to be exposed to the elements and the sun, both of which can be attributed to signs of ageing. This is why you can find coconut oil in Inlight Beauty's Line Softener Intensive, an organic and natural take on anti-ageing cream. Use it daily and topically on lines which need softening.
Dry patches: Inlight Beauty's Deep Moisture Balm is also recommended for the face, as it offers deeper hydration for dry or mature skin. Great to use on dry patches and sun spots.
Coconut oil for body
Coconut oil has an incredibly low boiling point, which makes it perfect for applications to the body as a little goes a long way. It can be applied directly to your skin, however, it is recommended that it is used as an active ingredient in skincare.
Inlight Beauty's Body Butter contains coconut oil as a star ingredient. By combining it with rosehip oil, nettle and bilberry, as well as a variety of other natural and organic components, it hydrates dry skin anywhere on the body.
Massage it all over after a shower for an instant nourishing and hydrating effect.
It is also incredibly effective at helping to prevent stretch marks. Due to the natural and organic nature of our skincare, it is completely safe to use during pregnancy. Simply apply regularly when stretch marks are red to help reduce their appearance.
How to best use coconut oil
Although coconut oil has many wonderful benefits for skin, hair and body, it is best used in small amounts and combined with other natural ingredients and carrier oils.
It is important to purchase your skincare from a reputable brand that takes all of their ingredients into consideration, to ensure that they all work in synergy with each other.
We use Organic Coconut oil in different percentages in some of our products, to take advantage of its highly moisturising and antibacterial properties. This ensures that your skin is willing to accept and absorb the product. We then blend with some complementary botanical extracts in a synergic positive action. The results have been great so far even on acne-prone skin.
