Eczema: Jamie's Story

Jamie, founder of AURA WELLNESS & BEAUTY, overcame severe eczema and suspected Topical Steroid Withdrawal (TSW) through holistic healing. Now eczema-free, Jamie helps others explore both Western and alternative medicine for lasting skin health. Read her story below:

I can't remember a time growing up without my arch-nemesis: eczema. This red, itchy enemy decorated my face, neck, arms, and hands with raised, weeping patches that would make me wish for invisibility when strangers stared at me on the London tube. My skin would fluctuate between clear and healthy to painful flare-ups, often triggered by mental health challenges or seasonal changes.

In the autumn of 2022, my seasonal flare-up spiraled into a nightmare. For the first time, even the strongest steroid creams, oral steroids, and immunosuppressants couldn’t help. I woke up to find over 75% of my body covered in a painful, weeping rash that no longer resembled eczema. I felt betrayed by my body, and no medical professional could explain what was happening.

A dermatologist offered me a choice between two lifelong drugs with severe side effects, telling me there was nothing else they could do. This led me to take matters into my own hands. I refused to accept long-term medication for a condition that seemed temporary.

I realized this wasn’t just eczema anymore; it felt like my body was screaming at me. Determined to heal my skin, I researched online and discovered a community of people experiencing the same thing. I believed I was suffering from Topical Steroid Withdrawal (TSW), a drug-induced condition, but my GP dismissed it. This was the final push for me to take control of my health and educate myself.

I created a holistic regimen, combining research, consultations with professionals in both Western and alternative medicine, and a deep commitment to healing. I vowed to exhaust all options before turning to lifelong medication.

After nine months of intense TSW symptoms, I am now eczema-free. Despite facing additional health challenges, I eventually opened AURA WELLNESS & BEAUTY in Cornwall, where I now help others on their healing journeys as a holistic facialist and masseuse.

If you’re suffering from eczema or TSW, know you are not alone. Skin is a reflection of our internal physical and emotional health, and when it signals imbalance, listen to it. While Western medicine is often emphasized, alternative treatments may offer healing as well—always seek professional guidance.

For me, a plant-based diet rich in anti-inflammatory omega complex and herbal supplements was key to my healing from TSW. But most importantly, it took time—time to address mental health challenges and reevaluate my lifestyle. Healing requires patience, and it's crucial to have a support system during chronic illness. Staying connected with others who had recovered from TSW and engaging in distractions like crochet and favorite films were vital for me.

If your body is healing, go gently. The power of choice is yours—research your options, as knowledge is empowering. For relief from the intense itch, my doctor recommended antihistamines, but consult your GP before use. I also found cold and hot compresses helpful.
